Turning our home into a holiday.

As a fairly recent home owner (2009), I am slowly accumulating Christmas decor. I’d love to go on a holiday shopping spree but it’s just not necessary. We did host Thanksgiving at our home but have no plans of hosting a Christmas party. I also found the perfect decoration for above the fireplace and I’m obsessed. It’s an awkward little space that I’ve been trying to fill since the day we moved in. So, here is what my view looks like…

The stockings are from Pottery Barn and the tree is from a rush through the doors of Home Depot on Black Friday a few years back. I think I claimed the last one. It’s a pitiful tree. Don’t get too close, you’ll see all the holes and the pole. I grew up with live trees my entire life and can’t wait to have an excuse to put one in my house. Until then, this will have to do. The twinkle tree was an Urban Outfitters find.

Sidenote: I can’t wait to paint the living room this winter.

terrarium love: planted.

A few months back, I posted about my love for terrariums. Since then, I’ve been experimenting with planting. I’ve never been one to have a green thumb. In the past, I’ve taken plants under my wing and watched them die a slow death. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I follow the instructions on the tag! Everything that I’ve planted outside this year has grown with love. So, it seems that the plants outdoors love me but the plants inside must hate me with all of their roots.

Today, I finally ventured out to Lowe’s and found that their succulents are currently 50% off due to end of season sales.  If there’s a time to take a chance on my terrarium, the time is now. I bought up a few of them and came home to give them a new home. Right now they are housed in the guest room. I think they will have plenty of sunlight there. I’ll keep you updated. All I can do is hope that they don’t die too quick.

an update on the dining room.

Last week I went crazy over this Venezuelan Sea paint by Benjamin Moore and hurried out to purchase a gallon to add life to my walls. Here is how it looks so far. I still have a few things to do (touch ups, clean ups, decor and a buffet table) but I wanted to share it anyway. I will capture better photos when all is said and done… I can’t stop staring at the walls. : )

See the before here.

let’s paint then dine.

I’m not yet a huge believer in buying a sample of paint to test on the walls. We will see if that changes after I paint our brown and boring dining room a beautiful, deep teal blue called Venezuelan Sea by Benjamin Moore. I plan on painting the kitchen a refreshing light green (I’m still debating the exact color).

I know that the dining and kitchen areas are supposed to have colors that appeal to our taste palette, but I’m so tired of seeing red beige dining rooms. I’m taking a stand and so is my friend at the paint counter in The Andersons. It’s just like the silly rule that you can’t wear white pants after labor day.

So, here’s what’s going on the next few days…

vintage: tick tock goes the clock.

I don’t know how I found this or what prompted me to search for antique clocks, but I did and I fell in love. I’m not even joking. I actually bought the first one picture below because I couldn’t let it fall into the hands of another. What a perfect way to add a little character to a room. I plan on adding this treasure to our guest room upon arrival. Here’s what I found on Etsy:

1. Vintage Russian Alarm Clock by Jantar from Clockwork Universe.
2. Vintage Sea Green Alarm Clock Radio by Motorola from Atomic Attic.
3. Vintage Pink Peach Alarm Clock made in France from French Melody.
4. Vintage Soviet Union Alarm Clock by Jantar from Old Oaks.
5. Vintage Flip Alarm Clock from C Marie.
6. Shanghai Alarm Clock by Diamond from The Big 8′s.
7. Orange Vityaz Alarm Clock from Soviet Era.

One of my favorite thing about these clocks is seeing the faces on the back. Some are happy, sad and even indifferent. I must admit, it was hard to pick and choose what clocks would make it to this post. There are so many out there. For more vintage clocks, just search Etsy.

the bedroom, nearly complete.

As some of you may know, I’ve been working on our bedroom for a while now. We finally installed a new ceiling fan which motivated me to paint the ceiling and the white wall. Take a look . . .

I started with the Benjamin Moore Aura paint for the matte grey on the walls. Picking out a grey color has proven to be difficult. Our first attempt at a “grey” paint happened near the back door of our home. The walls ended up being a light blue. So, when you do go to change the colors of your walls, hold the swatch out in the natural sunlight. Luckily Benjamin Moore offers giant swatches that show what the coverage would look like. The Aura paint already has a primer mixed in and they tell you that only one coat is necessary. This held true with the darker color but, when I painted the guest room with the same brand, it failed. Because I was using a lighter color (a cream-white), I had to go over the walls with primer and 3 coats!

Note to self: Aura is awesome for dark colors and just plain sucks for lighter colors. Go with a cheaper paint next time. : )

On our honeymoon, I picked up a sweet stencil kit from West Elm in Austin, TX. This is obviously what I used to paint the white wall. It’s hard to catch but it’s there. I used a matte white to paint the wall and then a semi-gloss white to paint the stencil. It adds just enough texture and character to the room. I can’t stop looking at it as the light makes the semi-gloss shimmer!

And, finally, here is what our bedroom looked like on move-in day:

side note: I will discuss my hate towards ceiling fans in a later post. Just know that it is a necessity in our home.

Rug, Duvet cover, night stands, curtains and lamps: Ikea
Stripped sheet set & stencil kit: West Elm
Wooden Shelves: Pottery Barn
Bird Pillow: Target
Magazine Hamper: Pier 1
Paint: Benjamin Moore from The Anderson’s (shop local!)
Wrought Iron Bed: The American Iron Bed Co: Melody
I’m actually amazed that the bed is still for sale as it was purchased in 2005 and they are made in the USA!

home sweet home.

The curb appeal of our home is still a work in progress, but here is what we’ve done so far. Up next, blue/purple paint for the front door!

Bushes before:

This spring we finally said goodbye to these horrid, outdated bushes! They came out nicely with the help of a chain and truck. We’ve used the porch more in the past few weeks than we have since we moved in. Porch party?

garden planter update:

Recently, I blogged about my search for planters to place on the front porch and finally, I made my way to TJ Maxx to check out their outdoor planter selection and I’m glad I did. Check out these planters I scored for under $60! I still plan on buying the Perch Pot from Crate & Barrel for $19.95. Can’t wait to fill and display them.

something inspirational.

I’m loving these Monday Moments posts by Kerry from Super Swoon. She takes inspirational quotes and turns them into beautiful posters through excellent typography choices. Love them and am inspired to design some quotes for my house.

planters pick.

Now that we are homeowners, curb appeal seems to be a priority. And, with planting season just around the corner, I find myself searching for the perfect planters to accessorize our front porch. Until now, I never realized how hard it was to find the perfect pot for your plants. And, damn, they are expensive! Below is a selection of some that I like.

1. Perch Pot from Crate & Barrel, $19.95
2. Cracked White Planters from Crate & Barrel, $4.95 – $39.95
3. Östlig Plant Pots from Ikea
4. Fresh Green Planter from Crate & Barrel, $8.95
5. Herb Planter from Crate & Barrel, $9.95
6. Rainbow Buttoned-Up Cache Pot from Lowe’s, $14.95
7. Tuscan Planters from Pottery Barn, $149 – $299
8. Moss Olive Jars from Crate & Barrel, $129 – $189
9. Eclectic Galvanized Metal Planters from Pottery Barn, $29 – $149

I’m thinking of making my own planters out of the galvanized metal tubs that I used as beverage containers for our wedding. Just drill a hole in the bottom and I’ll be set. Also thinking of swinging by TJ Maxx and some local garden stores to see what their selection is.

Sidenote: One of my dreams is to have a lemon and olive tree.
